Statement on Retired Asian Elephant
(April 26, 2011 - Vienna, VA) Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® sadly announces the passing of Lutzi, a revered and cherished 61 year old female Asian elephant, at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation® in central Florida. Ringling Bros.® veterinary staff determined euthanasia was appropriate due to the geriatric elephant’s declining health and a necropsy was performed. Relevant federal agencies were contacted.Lutzi spent 56 years of her life with the Ringling Bros. elephant herd and was considered one of the most charismatic animal performers with The Greatest Show On Earth®. In 2005, she retired to the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation where she spent the past six years with the herd and was cared for by dedicated members of the Ringling Bros. animal care and veterinary team. Lutzi was one of 12 elephants, including four retired Ringling Bros. elephants, over the age of 60 in the North American Asian elephant population of approximately 300. She will be missed by her human family who remain committed to the elephant husbandry that Lutzi’s long life embodied.
