POSITION SUMMARY:
The Costume Specialty Crafts Artisan works as part of the Palmetto workroom on creating and maintaining costumes for new productions and refurbishment projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Is responsible for the professional standards of conduct, appearance, and workmanship of personnel in their respective jobs.
  • Will work with the Costume Director, Costume Shop Manager, and Designers on creating specialty costumes and costume elements for new and currently running productions.
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to evaluate existing costumes and make appropriate choices for repair.
  • Is responsible for working with the first hands when applicable with regards to technique, accuracy and speed, and provide appropriate instructions when required.
  • Responsible for staying within the budgeted number of hours allocated to each project as stated in the Workroom Production Worklist.
  • Responsible for meeting all realistic production deadlines.
  • Responsible for establishing cost effective methods to complete deadlines in an appropriate timeframe.
  • Seeks to continually improve operational efficiency.
  • Accepts all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
  • DESIGNATED FUNCTION: Standing 40%, Bending 30%, Lifting 15%, Kneeling 5%, Sitting 5%, Walking 5%.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Hand manipulation, Reaching, Grasping, Visual, Auditory, Driving.
  • DESIGNATED FUNCTION: Mathematics-High, Reading-High, Verbal-High, Written-High, Reasoning-High.
EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have 5 years professional experience with the following skills: Specialty Foam Construction, Fur, Fabric Painting & Dying, Millinery, Draping, Sculpting, Pattern Making with a strong focus in character costumes and associated elements.
  • Ability to read, analyze and follow written instructions.  Ability to provide logical solutions to problems and to interpret a variety of requests or instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form. 
  • Must have the knowledge and ability to run the machinery in the Costume Department such as industrial sewing machines, serger, air brush and have basic understanding of theatrical terms and directions.
  • Must have an artistic eye and be able to understand and successfully realize the design concepts of the Costume Director or designer.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Must be able to travel and work, as required, in out of town locations.
  • Must have the ability to train wardrobe associates in a variety of craft techniques, and supervise the work of first hands, operators, and finishers.
