FELD ENTERTAINMENT AND DISNEY LIVE FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT TO PRODUCE
A NEW SERIES OF LIVE PRODUCTIONS BASED ON DISNEY'S CLASSIC CHARACTERS
Worldwide tour will launch in summer 2004
Vienna, VA - July 29, 2003 - Feld Entertainment, Inc., producers of Disney On IceSM and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, and Disney Live Family Entertainment, a unit of Buena Vista Theatrical Group, will produce a new series of live, touring productions featuring Disney's beloved characters and stories. With the first show slated to launch a worldwide tour in summer 2004, the new productions will extend the presence of live Disney entertainment into new markets. The name of the new producing banner, along with the details of the shows, venues and dates will be announced at a later date.
In making the announcement, Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, said, "I am excited about expanding the successful relationship we have with Disney that has been so wonderful for 24 years. This fall, Feld Entertainment embarks on the 24th year of its relationship with The Walt Disney Co., as it unveils Disney On Ice presents Disney/Pixar's Monsters Inc. The agreement to produce the new series of live, touring productions is part of a long-term contract extension to produce Disney On Ice. The concept of Kenneth Feld, Disney On Ice spectaculars have performed in 297 cities in 48 countries on 6 continents. Disney On Ice blends the awe-inspiring talents of world-class professional figure skaters with stirring stories, enthralling music, dazzling lighting, lavish costumes and innovative scenic designs to create a memorable experience for families around the world.
Buena Vista Theatrical Group (BVTG) operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. BVTG's hugely successful division, Disney Theatrical Productions, was formed in 1994. The company's inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, is currently the seventh-longest running show in Broadway history. In May 1997, The Walt Disney Company completed restoration of the historic New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street, reopening with the world premiere concert of Alan Menken and Tim Rice's King David. Later that same year, Disney opened The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony® Awards including Best Musical, as well as the 1998 GRAMMY® Award for Best Musical Show Album. Now in its sixth sold-out year on Broadway, The Lion King can also be seen onstage in London, Toronto, Hamburg, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Chicago and touring throughout the U.S., with productions opening soon in The Netherlands and Sydney. In June 1999, Disney premiered its first new musical outside of the United States when Der Glockner Von Notre Dame, an adaptation of the Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, opened in Berlin. The company's most recent production, Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, opened on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in March 2000, receiving four 2000 Tony® Awards including Best Music/Lyrics and the 2000 GRAMMY® Award for Best Musical Show Album. Aida can also be seen in The Netherlands and touring throughout the U.S., with productions opening soon in Germany and Japan.
Disney Live Family Entertainment (DLFE), under the direction of John Clark, Senior Vice President and General Manager, is responsible for managing the license with Feld Entertainment for Disney On Ice and other touring licensed family entertainment shows. In addition, DLFE creates promotional live character entertainment shows and events through its Walt Disney Special Events Group.
